Objective: The objective of the activity is to develop and demonstrate in orbit the processing capabilities required to integrate satellite in distributed ledger systems (e.g. blockchain). This will extend the role of satellite beyond the broadcasting of the distributed ledger. The demonstration will showcase the unique added-value features that satellites can bring to distributed ledger applications. Targeted Improvements: Enabling the integration of satellite into distributed ledger systems. Description: In recent years, a rapidly emerging technology known as 'blockchain' (one example of 'Distributed Ledger Technologies' - DLT) has cemented its position as a key technology for future economic, social, governance and logistic systems, offering the possibility to increase transparency, security and decentralisation. Distributed ledger applications have the potential to boost the growth of Information Communication Technologies (ICT). Satellite could play a central role in such systems by offering some unique features such as geolocation oftransactions, deployment of efficient and robust consensus algorithms, or full deployment of an entire distributed ledger system inorbit. Hence, this activity will develop the necessary processing capabilities and interfaces to integrate satellite communication into a terrestrial distributed ledger system. The distributed ledger system will be implemented into a test-bed. The space componentofthe test-bed will be an existing or planned satellite. Only software developments are foreseen for the space component of the test-bed. Tools and procedures for setting up and configuring the on-board resources will be part of the activity.
