Objective: The objective of the activity is to design, develop, manufacture and test a multiple input and output poles (simultaneously) switching device including high voltage lines. This shall simplify the design of Power Processing Units (PPU) and improve the electric propulsion system efficiency. Targeted Improvements: Improve PPU (and Electric Propulsion System) electrical efficiency with respect to a semiconductor solution (by 30%); Offer a European alternative to high voltage relays. Description: Nowadays a rather complex and costly design of a high voltage switching matrix is used in electric propulsion systems, commercially available from non-European suppliers. In electric propulsion systems, cross-switching of a high voltage is required due to the reliability/redundancy requirement (switching between main/redundant units), the reconfigurability requirement (switching high voltage converters between station keeping and orbit topping/orbit raising) or thrust vectoring (selecting one thruster to be powered). For lower voltage level Hall Effect Thrusters (HET), conventional relays seem to be a suitable solution. However, for higher voltages, including high specific impulse HET (or such operating in dual mode) and ion engines, relays become a significant challenge and are not available from a European supplier. An electromechanical solution tailored for application in electric propulsion has the potential to efficiently switch several channels at once, therefore resulting in the replacement of many relays by one component. Besides, compared to a semiconductor-based solution, a significantly improved efficiency and reliability is expected with an electromechanical device. Hence,in this activity a scaled engineering model of an electromechanical multi lines switch shall be designed, manufactured and tested toevaluate its efficiency compared to a semiconductor solution footnote: On Delegation Request (formerly called Priority 2) activities will only be initiated on the explicit request of at least one National Delegation.
