Unfurlable deployable antenna reflectors are commercially available from US suppliers. European developments have been carried out to TRL 4 for the deployable structure within GSP, TAS and TRP activities with a strong involvement of ESA and following the recommendations of the Large Deployable Antenna Working Group. European IPR has been demonstrated so far for 6 m aperture. In order to progress the TRL of all the critical elements and components not yet developed in running precursor activities a further step is required, in preparation of IOD. Currently the TRL is 4 for the deployable structure, 2 for the reflecting surface, 3 for the deployment devices. The activity will start with a review of the potential platforms and launchers to be used for IOD and establish requirements and interface as targets for the EM design. These will include Earth Observation requirements. Critical breadboarding tasks will be performed to verify main functions and materials parameters related to environment (GEO and LEO). The activity will then aim at the design of the demonstrator reflector assembly and critical breadboarding of the elements with the lowest TRL, mainly the reflecting mesh with the shape control network, the deployment and hold down mechanisms and the deployable arm. The full reflector assembly willbe designed and built. Functional testing, including deployment repeatability and shape accuracy will be performed. Hardware to be produced during this activity are: - Breadboards for verification of functional and environmental requirements (including Earth Observation applications) - Demonstrator model of representative quality for a flight demonstrator, to be tested for deployment functionsand main critical environments. It is foreseen that the full testing (RF, structural, environmental) and eventual refurbishment forEQM or PFM will be covered in another activity.
